I am helping a friend out getting Win2K installed from win 98. With Win2K SP1 everything works fine. When I update to Win2k SP4 I cannot connect to the ISP (Verizon), using the Verizon connection software. When I try to connect it simply says hardware error. They claim it's a windows problem and can't help me. I have tried two different ethernet cards one is a Netgear FA311 and the other is a generic card I had laying around. I have tried switching PCI slots, checked for IRQ conflicts, updated drivers etc...
Anyone have any other ideas I can try?

What is the ethernet card's status in the device manager? Do you have and have you installed the 2000 drivers for the ethernet card? Have you uninstalled the Verizon doftware, and just used the Windows Internet Connection Wizard to connect to the internet? Have you checked the Network and Dial up settings in the control panel?

Capt,

Thanks for your reply. The device manager shows the ethernet card working properly. I have installed win2k drivers, everything works ok with win2k SP1. I haven't uninstalled the software and tried using the internet connection wizard. The Network and dial up settings seem fine.

The only other place that I can think of to check are the settings in the control panel>adminstrative tools>services. You can right click and select properties to change things to manual, automatic and disabled. Perhaps a needed item for Verison is not configured correctly in services. Blackviper.com has a complete list of what are essential services for 2000.

I am asuming he uses PPoE, get ethernet 300 software, or get a router with PPoE integrated. Contact me for the software if you can't find it. Cheers
