While doing the Win2K setup on my new PIII 933 PC, I encountered the following problem:-
The error message read:" The file dxdiag.exe was not copied correctly.
THe file setup placed on your HD is not a valid Window 2000 system image. I f you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the WIndwos 2000 CD.
..."Note: I am sure the CD has no problem because I use it to install on other similar PCs as well. I changed the motherboard, SDRAM and even CPU but same problem still occured.
PC's configuration: ASUS CUV4X motherboard, 512SDRAM, PIII 9333 CPU, ASUS X50 CD ROM, IBM 30G HD, 3COM NIC, Matrox G450 Display card.
Any suggestion?

My pc configuation is...
PC's configuration: ASUS 4X socket A motherboard, 768SDRAM 133MHz, Athlon 1000MHz CPU, Samsung X48 CD ROM, Fireball 70G 10000 RPM HD, 3COM NIC 900b, Ge-Force 32MB DDR.
And windows 2000 installation installs PERFECT!

The file "dxdiag.exe" is a DirectX program. Try removing all non-essential peripheral hardware (i.e., sound card, NIC, modem, etc.) until you have just the minimum hardware needed to bring up the system (i.e., video card) and try again.
Also, make sure you have the latest BIOS for you motherboard. You can get the latest BIOS for you motherboard at: http://www.asus.com/Products/Motherboard/Pentiumpro/Cuv4x/index.html.

This problem is encountered when there is a MAJOR hardware conflict in the PC like faulty/mismatched memory, wrong motherboard settings, mismatched processor/motherboard. I advise you to take it up with your supplier, he can try different components until it works! Windows 2000 is very picky about the hardware, otherwise it can not claim to be stable!

install win2k with nothing but a video card installed.
then add the other components afterward
win2k like mentioned above is very picking
you might even want to checkout the HCL to be sure your equipment is able to work with w2k

Dxdiag is a DirectX diagnostic tool that retrieves information about your system and allows you to run diagnostic tests for video and sound functions that make calls to DirectX APIs. You can theoretically skip installation of this file and proceed if this is the only problem you are having witht he setup. Upon completing the installation sans the dxdiag.exe file, uninstall your video hardware drivers if win2k pnp them. You can install the latest DirectX which would be 8 at present. This should include the dxdiag.exe file your missing in win2k setup. Thereafter you want to install the latest matrox video drivers for your G450 (w2k520 from matrox currently). The one item that may be causing an issue is your onboard audio codec. If the above doesn't work try disabling the onboard audio (should be on page 19 of your mobo manual). But sounds like you got a bad CD.
