Subject: Win2k server not booting in normal mode.
Comment:

Hi,
I maintain a Win2k server which is installed on an IBM X220 server which is a normal entry level server. The problem I am facing is that the Win2k server has suddenly started giving Blue Screens and rebooting when booted in normal mode (just before entering the username and password). It takes a very long time to boot using 'Safe mode with networking
'. However it boots using 'Safe mode'.
When booted in this mode I have observed many unusual devices seen under the 'Network Adapters' part of the Device Manager. These are as follows :
WAN miniport (IP)
WAN miniport (L2TP)
WAN miniport (NetBEUI, Dialin)
WAN miniport (NetBEUI, Dialin)#2
WAN miniport (NetBEUI, Dialout)
WAN miniport (NetBEUI, Dialout)#2
WAN miniport (NetBEUI, Dialout)#3
WAN miniport (PPTP)

I have not installed any hardware related to these devices. I even can't uninstall these devices from device manager because the OS doesn't allow this by giving an error like "System doesn't allow uninstalling this device".
Reinstalling the OS seems to be the only solution. Can I get some solution which doesn't require me to reinstall the Operating system? Help/ Solution requested urgently.

Thanks And Regards

Are there any other errors in your Event Viewer? Are you sure it's the NetBEUI stuff? And are you really running NetBEUI on a W2K server with a WAN connection?????

Oh, and Safe Mode takes like 4 times as long to boot than normal mode....

Hi Lucid,
NetBEUI is present on the Win2k server. But I don't have any WAN connection. All I have is a dialup connection to an ISP. Safe mode with networking takes a very long time to boot. Normal mode causes ble screens. Only safe mode boot is possible .
There a re many errors seen in event viewer related to failure of mnay n/w services.
Any more details required?

Thanks

Yogesh

Ok, not sure why you are running NetBEUI, my suggestion would be to log in under Safe Mode and uninstall it. Then reboot and see if that takes care of things. If that doesn't do the trick try disabling those weird devices you have. Might try uninstalling your network card and reinstalling it.
I'd also suggest running some kind of virus scanner, just in case. If none of that helps, maybe start a new post with what you've tried so far and I'm sure someone can give you more things to try....

I have the same problem witH w2k professionl machines. Struggled a lot but still awaiting for a solution. You can try one thing try to uninstall network work card and reinstall it. I have found some times the problem gets solved. But some cases even after this it horribly fails

I'm not sure about the Win2k Server problem, but the "Wan Miniports" are on my Win2k Professional also.

Well, if opened Device Manager, click "View", ticked "Show Hidden Device", then you will see them.

If you down wanna see them, just untick the "Show Hidden Device", and you won't see the "Wan Miniport" devices anymore.

I'm not sure, but I suspect these are for Dialup, just like "Dialup Adapter" under Win98
