I have an Asus A7V and an athlon T-bird 1.1 ghz processor. Geforce video card, 256 micron pc133, 3com network card, sblive value, enermax 450 watt power supply. My computer randomly crashes. The entire screen freezes and i must reboot the computer. This happens at least twice daily and i cannot figure it out. I have tried the following

1) new motherboard froma asus p3v4x to asus a7v

2) New processor from intel p3 733 to athlon 1.1

3) new memory micron and nec

4) new power supply 300w deer to 450w enermax

5) tried different combinations on my 5 hd's

6) removed fastrak controller

7) swapped video cards even tried pci video card still crashed

8) reformatted installed win2k like 8 times

As you can i see i've tried so much. Tried changing settings in the bios from optimal to normal etc. Any suggestions i'm so fed up :o(

Stupid question, but did you flash the motherboard BIOS to the latest version (v1004c)? There's also an updated Promise ATA100 driver, but it wouldn't download so I couldn't get the version info.

Sounds like you either (A) Are one of the lucky people to get the release of Windows 2000 that has problems with PIII and ATHLON (especially athlon) my work server had the same problem and we had to get the latest service pack from Microsoft and then lateron bought a newer copy. or (B)If the machine has a dedicated internet connection, this is called a KOD attack, try taking out Video Cards, Network, Cards, and anything you can, remember, it takes just even something such as a conflicting device to hault your system

I have the 1004D motherboard drivers which are the recommended from what i hear. I have always used the same version of win2k install that might be the case i will try obtaining another copy. I installed SP1 for win2k but that did nothing. I have the updated promise drivers. Any other suggestions? I'll try to reformat with another win2k install, how can i tell if its a working athlon version?

Since a week I also have a ASUS A7V MB with a 1GB Athlon processor with the same 'freezing' problems with Windows NT and Windows 2000. I also upgraded to SP1, BIOS 1005D, latest VIA drivers and so on. The problem occurs on the average two times per hour. I have no idea what causes this problem, my suggestion would be with the PC 133 memory, but I don't know what the settings should be. I also wonder why I can't set the BIOS setting from Optimal to Normal. (I just does not accept that change..)

I have read the thread re crashing A7V and i would do the following ( this applies to W2K)

1) Update you graphics card drivers e.g. latest detonator drivers from nvidia

2)Download all the latest patches from MS relating to AGP issues and VIA. Dont forget the MS Hotfix for ATA 100.

3)Flash the latest BIOS from ASUS which now stands at 1007 (promise is now ver 35)

4) Update your mainboard software with the latest VIA drivers which now stand at ver 29 for 1 in 4.

5)DirectX8 should be loaded too.

It took me a while to get my board stable but I am now completely mad and bald. If any body want to know my board configuration please drop me an e-mail. Oh and stay away from IE5 and security updates cos they will kill your OS.
