I am going to install and implement 2 Win2k Advanced Servers for file sharing, print server, and App Server. I went to a Win 2k Server training seminar and to make a long story short, was told that XP will not work well with the Win 2k servers and that I should upgrade all my Win 95/98/ME's to Win 2k Pro and that I should downgrade all of my XP's to Win 2k Pro. Is there any truth to this??
I'm new to the Win 2k world and there was alot of talk about policys not being pushed through to the 95/98/ME/XP workstations.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance....

I think (perhaps) the distinction is between Windows XP HOME edition or PROFESSIONAL Edition.

How to Change a Computer Name or Join a Domain in Windows XP. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 295017. And note the section,

" NOTE: Home Edition is not designed to join domains; only workgroups. To join domains, use Professional version or above.
"

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=295017

Summary :
Using Windows XP Home Edition instead of Windows XP Professional in a Domain Server
environment is a trade-off :

+ Windows XP Home Edition is Less expensive than Windows XP Professional

- Windows XP Home can NOT join the Domain to benefit from the centralized Userdatabase,

so you will have to manually make sure that the username and password will be the same on both your XP Home system and in the Domain User Management ( which can cause some hassle, when your Domain Administrator is enforcing a change of password every x weeks)

- No execution of Login script, when accessing the Domain server

Look at (for a brief summary, Windows 2000 and XP Pro are fine on a Domain, Home is not ment for an Enterprise Domain structure)

Hope this helps you out

XP Pro will work. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

XP Pro is simply Win2k with some microsoft spyware included, and some resource-hogging eye candy. Think of it as an OS created by the weasels in the marketing department.

Win2k = NT 5.0
XP Pro= NT 5.1
