I have a user who has a Dell laptop running Win2K. I made his server directory (on an NT4 server) available offline so that he can access his files when on the road. He is complaining that he's been getting "baloon" messages indicating that the server is not available, even when he's connected to the LAN. I have observed this myself. The server eventually seems to come back, and when he logs off the files synchronize successfully. There is no problem with his LAN connection that I can find. Also, he says that sometimes when he's not logged on to the network, he will be unable to access his offline files, but will be able to do so at reboot.

The reason why his machine is doing what it's doing is because it is configured that way! All that you mentioned is configured through the Offline Files Options---Including the BALLOON!
