fresh burn of win2k pro on my com crap 7470
with and ess-allegro sound card and i have no sound. tried reinstalling drivers to no avail. device mngr says everything is all right and when i go to control panel sounds/multimedia the volume control bar
is disabled. note that if i turn the speaker up manually i hear a little static and
thats it. please help.

If the vol control is disabled it is a driver issue.
Is it an ISA sound card? windows2000 has problems with many ISA devices in that it doesn't support them.
Also, you may need the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.
Try uninstalling it from Device Manager, and reinstalling it after restarting the machine. That's about all I can think if right now.
If all that fails, go down to a boot fair any buy an SB16 for 50p. It's old, fairly good, and supported by windows2000. Its probably better than an ESS Allegro anyhow.
