You really don't need a hub for a 2-PC simple P-to-P LAN; jus a NIC in each PC and a cat-5 upt cross-over cable between them. Software you have already in the OS. But a hub does allow for future growth.

So with a hub...
Verify you have standard/straight thru' cables between each PC and the hub; also that you are not putting one cable into the up-link socket in the hub (or at least that the input is switched to standard/non up-link mode).

After-which, go thru it all with Jo Helmig at:

If still stuck after that post back?

Make sure they are on the same network.

Make sure you have link lights on the NIC's and the hub.

On each machine do an ipconfig from the command prompt.

Verify the computers IP address, subnet mask and default gateway are set correctly.

If need be manually set it.

Right click my network places
Choose properties
Right click Local Lan Connection
Choose properties
When the window pops up hightlight internet protocol (TCP/IP)
Click properties
TCP/IP properties box will open
Click Use following IP address
Computer 1
IP address 10.10.10.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Leave blank
Click apply
Click OK
Same steps
Computer 2
Ip address 10.10.10.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway Leave blank
Click apply
click ok

Goto start/run/ Type cmd
Command prompt window will open
Ping from one machine to the other. You should then have connectivity.

Good luck.

You may alsowant to consider running netbuei along with TCPIP. I have seen problems with 2000 machines and master browser elections for TCPIP resolution.

First verify that each system unit can recongnise itself on network.Go to start button and click on run, type \\yourcomputername e.g
mycomputername=peace
then you have \\peace,you should be able to you machine if the nic is installed and properly configure. If this is test is pass on individual unit then the problem is within your network cable and hub.
hope to hear from you
