Three off us have established a lan network, with two computers running on Win Me and one with Win2k. The problems we have are that we cannot find each other on the network, but we can ping each other. Now, the thing is that the pcs with the Win Me have problem finding the pc with the Win2k, and vice versa. All options for the network have been installed, but nothing seems to work properly. We even tried to specify the IPs for each computer, but again we cannot find each other on the network. The other thing though is that the two computers with the Win Me can see each other on the network. Do you think that there might be an incompatibility with the two Windows versions? I would appreciate if someone could give us some tips of how to correct the problem.

The computer with the Win2k have created a Guest user. Do I need to specify each user on this computer?
Also, do i need to specify the IP address, or leave it under automatic configuration?

creating users is always a good plan but its not going to solve this since a pc broadcasts its presence on the network on its own even if no one signs on simply by being powered on, the os loaded and connected up. if the hardware is all ok, all you really need is the same protocols, unique netbios names, and for them to have the same workgroup specified.
then they should all 'see' each other in network nhood.
the rest of the comms set up doesn't come into play until they try to find a way to route messages to each other.
and the users don't matter until you access resources.
basically a powered on pc will get a picture of any other members of its workgroup and is allowed to join that gang if its own name is ok and unique.
at each pc with any user id already setup as long as you can get a dosprompt type
nbtstat -n to get a report on a unique netbios name for each, a group name the same for all, and a user name of whatever.

With win 2k if you do not have DNS set up nothing will work. You need to set that up on the Win2k system and also set up the ip addresses of all the work stations

Win 2k as a whole does not need dns. AD needs DNS. He should be fine with out it, more headache than he needs, though if TCP/IP is used you might think about a lmhosts file to help things out a little.

Can you ping the netbios names of the machines? Can you Start > Run \\%netbios name%\%sharename% ?

I've got new socks, have you?
