I am experiencing mouse & keyboard freeze up also. I have formatted and reformatted, installed and reinstalled windows 2k and service packs. System is a gigabyte mb,amd xp 1700+,256 kb ram, western 100gb hd, ati rage pro video onboard sound, microsoft usb mouse and internet keyboard. I thought the lockup was random. Strangely the machine locked in the same location on the microsoft download page 5-6 times over, even with a fresh reboot. No games, no real player or spyware, only the most recent versions of software for the components, and mcafee. Any thoughts?

It's the McAfee! Uninstall it, reboot and walla! Then go buy Norton Anti Virus.

Thank you gentlemen, I've heard similar stories blaming the virus software. I'll give it a shot, time will surely tell... Why would the Mcafee be responsible for these freeze up symptoms, I never had a problem with 98?

uninstalled mcafee and reinstalled AVG virus software. I've just gone into the same microsoft windows 2k download site and danced the dialog window around the page and froze the mouse once again. What now??

You'll need patience. Open your browser and go to www.google.com Open your Task Manager. Click on the Processes Tab. Start at the top. Look for processes that you may suspect could be eating up CPU cycles or processes you just don't know what they do. Type the process name in google, search and read what each process is and who uses it. I can't totally recall the McAfee process that was the culprit on my machine (something that started with a capital A). I searched google and read. Once you find a process that you think is the culprit, you can end the process and you should see an instant change in system behavior. Once (if) you have success, you'll need to make sure that the process is not in your Start up. Reboot. Check your Processes in task manager to see if it started up again. If it did, then you have to edit your Registry (seek and destroy) or find a 3rd party application that will allow you to deselect it from starting up. Windows 2000 doesn't have a start up configuration utility, so I'm e-mailing you the one I found on the web and use with every Win 2k installation I do. Good Luck.

I've disabled all questionable processes and still forced the system to freeze up. I thought reinstalling the ATI video card and software would help but I spoke too soon. It was more difficult to freeze but it comes in droves. Still searching for assistance. Thanks all! Tom
