I just purchased a new 20G IDE HD and I plan to install it on an existing PC that is currently running Win98. However, I want to install Win2k on that new HD and start using that new installed HD w/Win2k as the primary OS.
Are the following steps correct(specific questions included)?1) Install
1a) Fiddle with the BIOS settings
2) Partition
Qa: When I set up partitions do I have to boot
up using a start up floppy and then
run FDISK on the new drive or can I
just run FDISK from a command line
with Win98 already loaded (booted up)?
Qb: Now being since that I want to
eventually run Win2k off of this
newly installed HD how do I make sure
that the partition is NTFS and not
FAT32 (I've never used FDISK before)?
2a) Reboot (Required) ???
2c) Fiddle with the BIOS settings
3) Format
Qa: So can I just type Format (on whatever
partitions I created) from a command
line? Do I have to do this for each
partition or can I somehow format all
partitions on the disk at once?
3a) Reboot ???
4) Install Win2k on the newly formatted HD
Qa: When I boot back up do I have to do
so by either the Win2k start-up
disks, Win2k CD-ROM disk (w/CD-ROM
set as the start up device) or can I just
startup as normal with Win98 and then
run the Win2k setup from the CD-ROM
and install on the new drive itself?
4b) Reboot...
5) Switch the HD jumpers (switch the jumper from the current HD that has Win98 installed to Slave and the newly installed Win2k HD to Master) so Win2k is the OS that gets boot up???Is any of this on par? Is so/not then could somebody provide some Answers to my questions and fill in the blanks along the way? I know that there is information in the How-To section but I really didn't think that all of the instructions applied to this particular case.
Thanks in advance!

no, no ,no, no, no,
fdisk and format your 20GB hard drive as you've described. Then install win 2000 via win98 and when asked - there is an option for advanced installation. When that is chosen, the installation carries on and you will reach an option page allowing you to CJOOSE THE PARTITION onto which win2k will go. I currently have win98se on my c drive and win2k pro on my d drive. Win2k produces its own option screen to choose either os without you having to fiddle BIOS's etc, etc. When you've completed this, look at the boot.ini file that will be on the c: drive and (after backing it up first), edit that.Any problem - just e-mail
Hesh

the way I do it is to partition everything first. on mine, I have C,D,E,F,G,& H Partitions but you can do what ever you want as long as there's at least two partitions...one for each OS.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BOOT DISK THAT WILL LOAD YOUR CD_ROM.
Once the partitions are created, reboot to a boot disk and format them.
Load Windows 98 to C:
From Windows, run the setup program for Win2k. It usually asks you if you want to upgrade. SAY NO.. Then choose the option to install to a clean partition. During the install choose D:. You can change it to NTFS if you wish but remember that Windows98 wont be able to see it.
That's it. You will get the OS choices when you boot and Windows2000 will be primary by default.

To make Windows 2000 boot up automatically as the primary OS go to control panel to the system icon, right click and go to the properties, and then go to the advanced panel and choose 'startup and recovery'
