I have the same problem, Following the HP-upgrade page and installing all the patches hpprscan.exe fail to run. After pressing the green button the scanner will response and scanning is availble without all the options availble in the scanning software, " Don't install SP-1 for W2K the twain sorce will not be found after the upgrade".

I have tried the HP drivers that are supposed to work, and they don't. I had no luck before and after SP-1. HP's drivers simply don't work, and I have seen many posts on different NGs of people with the same problem. I cannot get Win2000 to recognize the scanner at all. I don't think HP cares to support this scanner and that is almost criminal.

In response to Response Number 4 of June 04, 2001, I am pleased to report that after one week of frustration with HP site support, I finally found in one of the several forums or site QA, the proper advise written by a Mark Shelton on May 02, 2001. All kudos go to him and the following is a excerpt of his write up as it worked for me on a Win2K Professional "clean install" with SP2 included:
1. Assumed that Win2K Pro installed including SP1 (ed., in my case it also had SP2). Disconnect scanner.
2. Go to Device Manager and enable the parallel port IRQ.
3. Install HP PrecisionScan v 1.02 (5100c) or as I did, download from HP the sj263en.exe (they will say something like "you may download but not install into your system" obviously because it is Win2K and the software is for 98 or NT 4.0. Ignore and install it.
4. Decline the reboot and also download sj268en.exe patch into your system (follow sequence 3. before 4.).
5. Reboot. System my hang. Wait a while, RESET, and it should clear. In my case it rebooted ok without hanging up which was a major success as I had repeatedly suffered BSOD's in the past days.
6. Righ click on My Computer icon.
7. Click Poperties
8. Select Hardware tab.
9. Select Device Manager tab.
10. Look for Imaging Devices, if found double click.
11. Select allscanner listings.
12. Click Remove at the bottom.
13. Look for Other devices; if found double click.
14. Select any scanner listings.
15. Click Remove at the bottom.
16. Look for SCSI Controllers; if found, double click.
17. Look for EPST for HP Scanjet scanners and remove it.
18. Shutdown your computer. The system may hang. Wait a while, and hope that nothing was corrupted on your hard disk.
19. Connect your scanner.
20. Boot your computer.
21. Run the sj269en.exe patch (which I should have added was to have been downloaded and a folder made for it and saved WITHOUT installing it then).
NOTE: The HP scanjet must be attached to the PC and powered for the patch to install OK.
22. In some cases, the scanner is not automatically moved from the Other Devices section of device manager to the Imaging Devices Section, if this happens run the same patch (in 21.)a second time and it will reassign the scanner as an imaging device. In my case it was properly placed as an Imaging Device with the proper icon and name of HP Scanjet 5100c.
NOTE: Altermantively, the parallel drivers may be updated manually by downloading the drivers (epstw2k.exe) from http://www.scmmicrosystems.com and follow the installations supplied. I had to follow this alternative procedure before I was up and running.

Additional information: as I also have an HP Desk Jet Printer, I did not connect it to the scanner until after my scanner was fully operational and tested.
I also did not install any of the software programs (Adobe Photo 2.0, Omni Page Pro, etc) that came in the CD that came with the scanner originally (Win 95 vintage). I did afterwards and they are also working fine.

I hope this helps. If so, thank Mark Shelton whoever he is.
