I have a Dell Precision Workstation 530MT at work.

When starting up, it will get to the initial screen where it loads the BIOS (and i can enter the BIOS config screen), but it locks up at the second screen where it's checking the hardware. It sees the Hard drive, but freezes as it's trying to read the next device after that.

I cannot start up in safe mode. Even F8 doesn't work.

I went into the BIOS and changed the boot order to make the CD the primary boot... which is working enough to get the Dell Utilities CD to work. Right now I'm running the diag utility on the CD, and it hasn't found any errors yet.

This all happened after I restarted after installing Final Draft 7.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi.
I think you would be quicker to Win 2000 over itself you will not lose any information, or any settings, and Windows will replace any corupt files. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

Hi,
I have almost same problem,during a dvd firmware update system crashed(dumping physicalmemry)and rebooted and would not find C drive or my dvd.I found dvd was conneted to same ribbon which probly caused this problem.I disconneted the dvd now my computer finds the c drive but will not boot and crashes at start-up (dumping phsical memory - registry failure)
I tried all options of safe mode system will not start and cashes.I can launch recovery console but I do not know which command to use to restore the system.
can anyone help please.
Oldhobo - could you please explain what you mean in response-1 (should I just insert cd and reinstall windows or there is another procedure - please help)

just wanted to add this note to my post:
The error reads following:

Stop: 0xc0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SYSTEM or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
