Subject: Win2K Dialup networking password problem |
Comment: I'm running windows 2000 on 1 machine at home and 2 at work. All 3 have the same problem, if I check the save password box in dialup networking for my internet connection when setting up the service or later when using it the next time I try to sign on to my ISP the password is doubled. Any fixes for this problem? Thanks Dan

Reply: (edit)Are you sure it is doubled or is your password 8 characters long? W2K adds DNS specific suffixes to the passwords. You can wipe it and retype it as many times as you like you would have to go into advanced TCP/IP settings and uncheck the append DNS suffix to stop it. It really doesn't hurt and will still hook up no problem and I personally just leave it alone.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for answering but it is a problem, it gives me an error message that my login name/password is wrong and to check spelling. My password is 7 characters long but when I try to reconnect the saved password is 14 characters long. Dan

Reply: (edit)What you are seeing when you see the extra ******** in the password box is not W2K adding anything to the password. It's a designed security measure inhibiting someone from telling how many characters are in your password when you choose to save one. I thought it always used 16 asterisks but maybe it's 14. Anyway, it's not changing your password or adding DNS information. -MW

Reply: (edit)The 16 "*" are there by default. Make sure that the caps locks is not enabled and that you type the correct password. Also try to create a new dial up connection to test.
