I have just added a XP Pro box to a Win2k Domain and I am having some problems. I have sucessfully added the XP box to the domain and can use network resources, but the XP box is unable to refresh its security policy automatically. If I change a group policy on the DC the only way it can be applied to the XP box is by using GPUpdate and the command prompt.

I am also getting event ID 1054 in the XP event log every time I log on.

"Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted"

I know this is directly related to the group policy not updating but I can't figure out how to fix it. I thought maybe it was a firewall blocking something but I uninstalled the firewall and the problem is still there. Someone please point me in the right direction.

Actually, I think you might have it backwards. I would say the policy isn't updating because of whatever is causing the error about the domain not existings.

My first suspect would be DNS. Are you sure you have DNS configured properly on this machine. In Preferred DNS server in the Properties of TCP/IP, make sure it is looking to the proper DNS server. Probably the Domain controller.
