Hi there,
I have a problem with a Win2K Professional client PC trying to access some folders in a WinNT 4.0 Server. The network has Win95/98 PCs, one Win2K PC, and one WinNT 4.0 Server. All are working with "Workgroups", not "Domains" (NT server is part of a Workgroup. Domain is not defined).
I defined some folders with restricted permissions (Security Tab --> Permisssions). Win95/98 users log in to their PCs using the same username and password that I defined in the NT server, and the permissions work just fine. However, the Win2K user can't access those restricted folders. He can access global "shared" folders in the NT, but can't access these restricted folders as the other users do. The account and password is the same in Win2K and NT Server. I know the account in Win2K is local, but how come Win95/98 PCs can work normally with the restricted folders and the Win2K can't? All are in the same workgroup. Any hints on how I can make the Win2K client access those folders?
Thanks

Ya... You can make the Win2K client access those folders by applying share permissions instead of security permissions. But prolly time for a Domain don't you think?

Thanks for the comment! So there is no way Win2K can access folders with security permissions, in a "Workgroup" environment? Win95/98 make that happen so simple. How complicated is to go from Workgroup environment to a Domain environment? Do I just change options in the "Network" settings, telling the NT to belong to a Domain instead of belonging to a Workgroup? I also need to install some software/protocol in the clients to log in to the domain, right? (Is it "Client for Microsoft Networks? What about in Win2K?) Is there a "How to" or technical paper describing how to do this?
Thank you
