win2k can't find the domain. the tcp/ip is configured as dhdp-client and the entrys of the tcp-servers are all correct (ip, dns, wins)
if i try to change from workgroup to domain the following message appears: "the domain name "xyz" is either invalid or does not exist"

Try making a computer account for the PC in the domain you are trying to join before you attempt to join the domain. Hope this helps.

You say the DNS settings are correct but are you sure?

Where does this client look for DNS? If it's a w2k client trying to find a w2k DC and failing, then it is most likely either a physical connection problem or a DNS problem.

Give some more info on IP address, DNS settings etc.

I bet you a nickel it's a DNS issue.

You could try making a reservation for the machine in the DHCP server.
With a reservation you would need the mac address of the NIC in the W2K pro box(ipconfig /all)
Also setting the DNS on the W2K pro to look at the server for DNS.

Is this in the initial setup of Win2K, or after the setup is complete?

I know that when am installing 2000, I will set all the ip properties, then try and find the domain, but it never works. Reason being that the OS hasn't loaded all the properties yet... it just knows what to load when it boots up the next time.
