Win2K and USB Thumb Drives ??

On a Win2K PC (with all current updates)...it seems to have a CAPACITY ISSUE with USB thumb drives.

Example:
Using a 1 gb usb flash drive...it will report the full 1 gb available. However...when trying to copy, say, 700kb worth of files to it...it will only copy around 4-500k or so...then report that the usb drive is full.

But...when viewing the flash drive...it reports free space available.

Has anyone else had this issue / is this some sort of limitation to Win2K computers?

Thanks

Does this happen to all your thumb drives or just the 1gb thumb drive?

I have 1gb and 2gb thumb drives on Win2k and they work just fine.

I believe there is a limit on the total number of files and folder that can reside on a FAT32 partition. This is a factor of the cluster size divided into the partition size. If you are writing many small files that would explain it. If your drives are formatted with FAT32 the cluster size is 4k. Divide the 4k into the 1GB and you will arrive at total cluster number. Even a 1 byte file will use the entire 4k cluster.

To follow up.....

It has something to do with writing to the ROOT of the flash drive.

It will only accept 5-6 mb of files there...

But....I can make a folder and fill the available capacity...as long as the files are going to that folder.
