I am trying to set up a network at home with a WIN 2000 svr with two WIN 2000 pro clients. The purpose is to learn how to administer this network. I want the server to be a DC. It will be a DHCP, DNS server and all that stuff that needs to make it a DC. Presently the computers are connected to a etherfast cable/DSL router (linksys) for internet access coming into the house. In the past when i set up this network, the client computer would get its ip address from the router and not the Win2000 server. I understand that the router has DHCP enabled, but i don't want to turn it off because another computer that is not part of the network i'm trying to make is also connected to the router, and i don't want to mess that computers internet access.
I have 2 of these routers , could i connect the 2 client computers and the server to this 2nd router, turn off its DHCP, and connect this 2nd router through its WAN port to the 1st router? Will doing this make the clients get the ip addresses from the server?
and still have the 2 client/1 server with internet access? or will i need a hub or switch instead of using the 2nd router?
If i could use the 2 router system, when i go to turn off the DHCP to the 2nd router, how will i know if thats the router that is getting DHCP turned off and not the 1st router?

You would need to turn off DHCP in the second router and also set the LAN address on a diferent subnet then the first router.

IE.
1st router.
WAN IP .. From ISP
LAN IP 192.168.1.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP enabled

2nd router.
WAN IP ... from 1st router
LAN IP 192.168.2.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP disabled.

presently i have just the 1st router set up. Servers ip address is 192.168.1.2 - 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is the routers ip address 192.168.1.1
what do i put as the prefered DNS server? i left it blank, but the computer entered its own 127.0.0.1 what does this number represent?
what do you mean by 'set the LAN address on a diferent subnet then the first router' for the 2nd router?

change the 2nd routers ip address to 192.168.2.1? the routers come with a default ip address of 192.168.1.1? if i disable dhcp on the 2nd router can i still get into its settings screen afterwards? do i connect the first router from any of its port to the UPLINK or WAN port on the 2nd router? does my server wich is connecting to the 2nd router need the same subnet 192.168.2.x as the router? my server is presently 192.168.1.x?
The first router is a wireless router with 4 ports for ethernet cables!!
