I have recently installed Win2000 with Service Pack 4 on my laptop and am trying to load the driver for an Epson Stylus C42UX inkjet printer. The printer functions OK in the disconnected self-test mode and has only a USB connector on the back.
I downloaded the driver and followed the instructions on the Epson site. During installation when it searches for the printer it finds an Unkown Device which appears in the USB Controller part of the Device Manager. I have downloaded, uninstalled and reinstalled several times with the same result.
I was under the impression I should see a 'USB Printer Support' under the USB Controller part of the Device Manager before I started the install. I see nothing relating to printers there either before or after.
I have no firewall or virus software and have used the USB port for other things such as a portable keychain memory device and digital camera neither of which appear to have permanent entries under USB Controller.
Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...

I have the same set up and similar printer.
1.You are SURE you have downloaded the correct driver
2. The driver MUST be installed BEFORE the printer is connected via the USB lead
3. Then when the system is connected it should pick up the printer, search for the driver(s)and install the printerThe printer will not "show up" under the Device Manager USB list but should be in the "Printer" list in Control Panel. However you are right in assuming there should be an entry "USB printing support"
Usually, removable devices such as the digital camera and portable memory devices only show up when connected and being used.
