We are currently upgrading numerous workstations to Windows 2000 from 98. We are having lots of problems. One in particular. Missing NTDLR (but it is not). Any suggestions?
Thanks

The HCL is a must, but missing NTLDR is usually a problem or corruption in the OS not a hardware problem.
If at all possible I would reccomend doing clean installs of Win2000 instead of doing the upgrade.
For this specific situation you could try creating a bootdisk to get into the os and replace the ntldr file and ntdetect with ones from working machines. The link below from microsoft will show you how to create the floppy to boot into the OS.
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301680This doesn't alway work, but it has worked often enough for me that I would try it.

Actually, I have done both. I really do not believe that it is Hardware. The HCL checks out. I can boot from a diskette, but even replacing the ntld does not work. It is almost as though it is looking in the wrong place.
I hate to do clean installs because everyone here runs different software, and for the most part the upgrades are OK. However, we are seeing different types of little problems including slowness.
If anyone has any upgrade tips I would be glad to hear them. Of any suggestions on the first message.

There are probably several possible causes.
But rather than post a whole string of links here to possible solutions on the www, I suggest 'you' do a search in google.com using the search term/string:ntldr missing during windows 2000 upgrade
The first one I found points a link (labmice) that includes an M$ KB article that deals specifically with it: i.e.
http://www.labmice.net/Windows2000/install/win9xupgrd.htm
listing:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255220
Hope this is the fix; or another search result points the way?

Similar question. I have W2000 Pro on my system, but would like to replace it with a clean version from my W2000 UPGRADE. After I reformat my hard drives, can the UPGRADE recognize my orginal W95 CD-ROM ?

The NTLDR is the NT Loader file. I'll tell you this, upgrades = nightmares (usually). If I were you, I would do a clean install instead of an upgrade. Try this, It may or may not work. Reboot with a Win 95 or 98 startup disk and type sys c: at the command prompt, reboot without the disk. But like I said before, I would consider a clean install rather than an upgrade. Good luck.
