WIN2000 Logon Script %username%

Created a logon script where I use the %username% variable. The login script executes on all my win98 workstations but the %username% is blank. Why? I cannot use this statement:
net use I: \\server\%username%
The %username is blank!

type SET at command prompt to get all possible variables EX USERNAME. IE IN BATCH FILE ECHO HELLO %USERNAME%

this echo's the username IE HELLO JIMBOB
