Hi Everyone,

I have read Microsoft's technical paper regarding this matter, but I still have some doubts and would really appreciate your help/guidance.

I have a Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller in my company network. I noticed that there are a lot of old/outdated DNS entries that are conflicting on the network (ex: old-hostname and new-hostname pointing to same IP address). I think this has happened over time when Computers are retired from the environment and also when computers in the Domain are renamed.

I went into DNS and removed a lot of these conflicting entries.

My questions are:

-When you rename a computer, does Windows not update the DNS records with the new hostname information?

-If a computer is no longer on the domain (ex: dead pc), does DNS not remove any entries that have not been used after x amount of time?

-What is the best way to manage this process and keep DNS nice and neat?
(ex: in an environment where computers are constantly retired, replaced, renamed, etc.)

Thanks for all your help and for reading this long post!!!

-Henry
