Has anybody experienced any problems running Windows2000 as a DHCP client?
I have a (Linux) DHCP-Server giving me a standard 192.168.*.* not segmented intranet.
No routers, gateways.
A win98 client can obtain an ip-address from the server, but the win2k client can't, anybody got similar problems?
(machine runs WIN2k RC2)
Any help is appreciated :)Jochen

Jochen,
I'm having the same problem - got around it by assigning permanent IP address to the machine -- however, I have another problem: my DHCP server is a 3-Com LAN Modem (ISDN), and Win2K resets the darn thing every time I reboot Win2K! Meaning everybody in the office gets knocked off the net...
If you (or anybody out there) have discovered a solution to the DHCP problem, let me know - it may help me to solve my other problem.
Thanks!!
Dave Rose

Sorry, I've got no solution for you. I only wanted to tell that W2K (German RC2) works perfectly with a WinNT 4.0 DHCP-Server. It accepts the given IP and works with server based profiles. I've got no problem with it.
That won't help you in the first place but it is an example of Win2K as a DHCP client without any problems. Maybe it's a problem with a special form of DHCP servers...
Hope you solce your problems soon, good luck...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess it's an issue w/ linux. I've been running the release version at home for the last 2 wks, (with a static IP, and w/ DHCP) connected to a NT4 svr. I've been running it at work since Beta2, also w/ DHCP and NT4.
I'm curious, if you setup a static IP, does it still work? Can you ping any other machines using wins?

I'm having the same problem. My DHCP server is a Novell Netware 4 server at work. I'm running the final release of win2k pro. My company gets a lot M/S products before they're finally released. I dual boot win98, and DHCP work properly. I tried some reconfiguring, problem still exist. So, I'm using a static address for now.

It worked -- finally.
Win2K does _not_ automatically start the dhcp client service, if you move from fixed to dynamic addresses.
(I think I disabled the [unnecessary if you run fixed IPs] service, to conserve memory after the installation)
Thanks for your help!
P.S. it works just fine, even with a linux server ;-) Next thing to go is dynamic dns from linux dhcp lease files.

Jochen -- I am running a w2k rc2 client with dhcp. The Linux FreeSCO router that I use assigns dynamic IP, DNS, and gateway information without problems.
