I had this problem the other week. It was a MAJOR annoyance and I have no idea what really caused it. At first I thought it was the 'Wake on LAN', but I dissabled that in the BIOS and removed the wire connecting the NIC to the motherboard. Didn't work.

I then dissabled something else in the BIOS. I think it was called 'Wake on PME' (don't have my system in front of me at the moment) and that seemed to do the trick.

However, I'm not overly confident why that actually worked though. The Wake on PME had been enabled since I bought it- why had only just begun to cause problems recently when I have had the PC for 6 months?

I'm also using Win 2K with Service pack 2, but I don't think it's attributed to Win 2K as it would also occur in the POST when I powered the computer on and turned straight off again.

Possibly something to do with the soft power switch?

My System Info
Athlon XP1700+ 256MB
Motherboard- MSI KT266A

regards
Joey

Right click "My Computer" --> Properties --> Advanced --> "Startup and Recovery"

You will see the "Automatically reboot" is enable. Disable it then.

However, the computer reboots while shutting down because it is having "blue-screen error" in the shutdown process. If you disable the "Auto Reboot" as mentioned above, your computer will halt and a blue-screen error will be displayed, a reboot won't occur. However, you should study why you have this blue-screen error, and it is the long term solution.

It is not only win2000 but also winxp has this design.

Hope it's useful,
Way

You have a program that is running before you shut down, not shutting down, causing the error. It happened to me with a drive encryption program
