Im an NT user most of the time
My home machine has 98 loaded
Apart from the security features (which will stop the kids screwing up my machine)
is it worth upgrading?
Is the os that much better?
It gets used for games, internet and office stuff.

You being an NT user you will know the security features it has. Windows 2000 has the same type of security features as NT and more. If you upgrade it and want to use it for games, windows 2000 now also uses the FAT32 system as well as the NTFS.
As for the op system itself it is much better and smoother running than 98. You will notice less crashes/freezes under 2000 than you have under 98.
Depending on any special programs you will be using, upgrade to windows 2000 may seem a better option if you are looking for system security, better performance and reliability.

like Wak said win2000 is a mush more stable Os. but for now not all component manufacturers have win2000 optimal drivers out, for now i would sugest trying dual boot and find out for yourself wich one you like better.

Ditto on the internet security. That is about all Win2k has to offer. Using "certified" drivers and the NT kernel makes it much more stable of an os. It is also very hungry for hard drive real estate. After the install, my windows folder reported 728mb. Unless "format" is a word your comfortable with, stay with Win98.

WINDOWS 2000 is a great os and I personaly have gone out and bought a bigger capacity disk to compensate for it need for drive space.
MICROSOFT HAVE DONE SOMTHING GOOD FOR A CHANGE.

Windows 2000 is, for the time being, a useless toy. If you are fortunate to have hardware that Microsoft has chosen to support in this release, and you want to "play" with its new features, install it next to a useful OS in a dual-boot system. This is your best bet at this point. Check the Hardware Compatibility List first (for ALL of your hardware), because Microsoft has chosen NOT to support a whole slew of hardware. Drivers (and even compatible applications) are still scant at best, even from the biggies like Adaptec. If the drivers are not included, and not available from the manufacturer's website, you will NOT be able to use the hardware. Many '95 programs simply DO NOT RUN. NT programs run OK, for the most part. The upgrade advisor is a piece of crap; it does NOT identify in any consistent way programs that will not run under 2000. So beware. If you are a home user, and if you do not need to keep up with the bleeding edge in features, DO NOT upgrade from 95/98. If you are an MCSE or a tech person and need to keep up with all the latest and greatest, install it alongside your regular OS, if you have the hard drive space. Overwriting your existing useful OS is asking for big trouble. Take it from me.
