Hmmm...How strange....
Has this message just begun appearing? If so, what preceded it? Was W2K just recently installed or upgraded? Is the PC standalone or on a network?

Fairly new install of Win 2K Pro. Standalone. It's a home machine with no network connectivity. The problem just started. No hardware or software changes were made that preceeded the error.
Guess I just need to know if I can fix the services.exe to get this to boot, or maybe just install Win 2K to another folder?
MS is NO help whatever. Big surprise there. :)

I've had the same problem on a system I just finished assembling. Win2K Pro, workstation on a network, peer-to-peer. I think I've solved it, time will tell. Under Network Neighborhood, go to Advanced Tab (top), go to Optional Networking Componets. See if the optional componets have been selected. Remove them. Reboot.
I think this solved my problem. It was really a puzzler, as I this is a new machine (AMD 1800 CPU) I just finished assembling. I assembeled one nearly identical about a month ago and it's never hiccuped once, and I couldn't figure what I had done differently on this one. I think this is it.
Please give me an email back with your findings as I only read the boards when I'm I can't solve the problem any other way.

i´ve got the same.
W2k pro update from win 95, first boot and second always ok but after the third boot it takes the error - waiting - boot up five times - waiting upps the system boot up without any errors - but its not windows - the error cames now every time...its a peer to peer network tcp/ip and netbeui installed no ip...
tomorro i will installed complet new - its windows...

Hey I am having the same problem, only I am pretty sure what caused mine. The machine was accidentally unplugged so wasn't shutdown properly. After it was booted back up I received the message. It was a clean install of 2000 and was running all of the latest service packs and updates. I am working on a fix now and will post a it if i get one. I can tell you that I did try replacing the file SERVICES.exe using the ERD commander and this didn't work.

THIS RESPONSE IS ALSO POSTED ON THE SITE, SO FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY THIS.

Your problem is ususally the result of a corrupt event log. Event logs are .Evt files located at C:\WINNT\system32\config\
Try this method by booting to the Recovery Console and rename the files. To get to it, you need to boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and press F10 at the Welcome screen, or Press Repair and Console. When you restart, new log files will be created. That should fix your problem I hope. Good luck!
