Win 2K Server and Linksys Router

I have been running win2k server behind a linksys router successfully for some time. I have DSL with a static IP address, and I have been using my linksys router for DHCP on my internal network.

I tried to set up active directory on my server, and have developed a problem with the server's ability to ping the router and its ability to get out through the router. As part of setting up active directory, the server set itself up as a dns server. The only change I noticed right away was that the server changed its dns address to the loopback (127.0.0.1).

Interestingly, my server can get an IP address from the router's dhcp, and have verified that it is the router (192.168.1.1) that assigned the IP. However, I can't ping the router. I also can't ping anything outside of the router. I have tried setting the server up with a static (192.168.1.2) IP because I understand that win2k dns servers must have a static IP. I have also tried changing the DNS settings on the router so that they include both the DNS settings provided by my ISP and the 19.168.x.x IP that the server uses. In this way, when I get dhcp from the router, the dns information from my isp and my local dns server address are given to the dhcp client.

The other computers on my network can access the Internet and can access the router without a problem.

Any thoughts?

Greets.

I had this same problem. Olny differance is I used the W2K server to DHCP, and set the router to a statice IP within the lease range.
I also hesitate to advise you, all thought I got my server to access the internet, I am also getting DNS errors on my workstations.

So, here's what I did, maybe it will help.

Check your subnet, besure it matches the router. It should pick it up it router is DHCP. IPCONFIG /ALL in the command propmt is a good tool.

This next step is what I think messed up my DNS. I took out the 127 loopback, and made the DHCP set the DNS on the server, when I tried to put it back in, it won't let me cuz its reserved for looback. I ended up usiing the static IP for the router as the DNS IP. So, everything works ok, just my event logs on the workstations get cloged with DNS erros. :)

Try making the router static, and make the server DHCP ? Use the reserve IP in the W2K server to reserve the IP you assign the router.

I also changed the routers subnet to 255.0.0.0 so it matched my DHCP from the server.

Hope this helps

Brian

I had trouble getting my server to accept the loopback address, as well. If you delete all dns server addresses, then put in a static IP with no dns addresses, the computer will automatically put the loopback back in if the server you are configuring is running dns.
