Trying to share a printer between two systems on a home network. Have reviewed several times the procedure laid down in Microsoft Help. Can't get printer to be recognized by network. HP 890C is the printer. Both CPU's running Win 2KP.

Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that this printer shared just fine when one computer was a win 95 machine and the other a win 98 machine. Have since replaced the win 95 machine and put win 2KP on both and now can't get to work!!!

At what point is the printer "not recognised". When setting up, when attempting to print to it?

When setting up, it's best not to put the printer name in, but click "next" and browse to the computer/printer.

Are you certain "File & Printer Sharing" is installed and enabled on both PC's?

I just went through this with my wireless network.

You should be able to ping the other computer with the printer by computer name. If not then you won't be able to reach it.

If your router has DNS capability use it.

You can also do what I did. There is a file called LMHosts.sam (sample) in the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc directory. That file gives you the information on setting up a lookup file that acts as a DNS locally. The file is created and saved as a text file with no extension. W2K looks for that specific filename in the /etc directory and uses the entries contained there.

they take the form:
n.n.n.n computername #PRE
n.n.n.n routername #PRE
127.0.0.1 loopback #PRE

and so on. (The #PRE statement loads these definitions into memory at bootup rather than having to read the file upon request). Once you can successfully ping the other machines you can share stuff.

one last thought, firewalls will get in the way of pinging if they don't have rules permitting internal pings. Turn the firewall off and get the sharing together. then go back and adjust the firewall rules to accept them.

Thanks for all the input. I have tried some already with no success but the last post is particulary interesting. I'll give it a shot on my off days.

I really appreciate the help.
