I am having occasional problems where my keyboard and/or mouse stop responding. I thought at first that there may have been a conflict with an older Blackhawk Joystick but have removed that and replaced with a new Microsoft approved Logitech Wingman FF. Seemed to stabilize for awhile.
When the problems first occurred, I could uninstall hardware (generally just the sound card & game port) then do a repair on Win 98 and Win 2K (dual booting with Win 98 as C:\ and Win 2k as E:\ in a 2 HD system...the other drive is exclusively 98) and evrything would more or less return to normal. No crashes & I could boot to 2K or 98 at will...the only problem was that max vid resolution I could attain in 98 was 600 x 480. (?)
Contrl Panel will often show device error (yellow exclamation) on keyboard and/or (both are PS2) but I also have a Microsoft USB Intellimouse that will function 98% of the time. I still can't get the keyboard to repsond and am now hopelessly stuck...both mouse & keyboard are showing as working properly at the moment in Ctrl Panel but the keyboard does not respond. I have tried to uninstall keyboard and mouse (in every possible combo & I can't get them to co-exist or uninstall. I can't key 'delete' at boot to get into setup. I even went out and bought a new MS Natural USB keyboard in the hope of circumventing the problem. No dice.
PS2 keyboard = IRQ1
PS2Mouse = IRQ10
(I thought they were supposed to share IRQ1?? ...I recall that they were sharing IRQ 1 at one point.)
Can't install & repair either 98 or 2000 because I can't use the keyboard to key 'R' or 'setup'
Have removed and re-installed Network card for cable modem, Vid card & sound card numerous times. There are no other cards installed. This did not help.
Filter keys are not and have never been installed.
Anyone?

Forgive me for being blunt, but why on Earth are you buying USB devices for keyboard and mouse?
Get regular keyboard and regular mouse and no problems.

Well Ed. Thanks for that helpful comment. Had you read the original post you would have noted that the PS2 devices DO NOT WORK.

That's not what your post said. You get a yellow exclamation? Maybe the keyboard is the problem, how about another keyboard?
Sorry if you really need to use USB, but I've never heard of the PS/2 ports going dead. Seen plenty of mice and keyboards go bad though.
Good luck with it.
