My system boots and runs apps fine, but I seem to get an error if I try and run command to get a DOS window, the message is:
c:\\winnt\system32\command.com
c:\\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt. The system is not suitable for running MSDOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "close" to terminate this application. The message seems to date from removing some spyware and restoring my system files using Configsafe (system file/registry backup & restore utility).
cmd.exe seems to work fine though. I found this link on computing.net which seems to relate to the problem:
http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/38109.html
and finding the Microsoft link which is mentioned:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305521
it talks about one of
• Autoexec.nt
• Command.com
• Config.ntbeing missing or corrupted. In fact, I can't find Autoexec.nt in the c:\winnt directory, although it is in the c:\winnt\repair directory. Copying it to the c:\winnt directory still doesn't let command run. Can anyone offer any guidance on what I should do here? Can Autoexec.nt be restored off the Win 2k Pro CD?
Thanks
Andrew

hey! whats up? you were near the answer ..
u have to place aotuexec.nt in system32 .. if already there replace it . but it should not be there .. will work after that im pretty sure let me know ..

Hi Snipes,
I tried copying it from the c:\winnt\repair folder and I still couldn't run command.com are you saying I should get it from somewhere else?
Andrew

dur... yes you copy it to the c:\winnt\system32 directory not c:\winnt !
Stupidity is hereditary!!!
A.

Don't use the one in the Repair folder. If you have access to another 2000 or XP machine, copy the autoexec.nt file from one of those machines.
If not, email me, and I'll send you a good file.

Jennifer, thanks for your recommendation. I do have another m/c with Win 2000 but copied the one from the repair folder before I saw your posting, and it seems fine. Is there some problem with this?
Andrew
