Whenever I restart my computer (Win 2000 PIII - Asus - 512MB) the computer quits the OS, monitor goes to standy, etc. That's all ok. The problem is that the computer won't do the second part of a restart which is: Restarting. It stays in this standby-like mode with all cooling fans running but no harddisk activity and the monitor on standby. All I can do is switch it off and turn it on again. But also that will only work if wait a couple of minutes between switch off and switching on again. Anyone knows what to do?

This could be a number of thing. I had this to happen for about a year and I checked everything. Usually it is a corrupted files that is causing it to hang. Sound or Backgound. I checked all the sound files. but when I changed the desktop back gruond I did not have any more problem. It was not my computer because I was installing some new hardware on a HP Pavilion for a customer and he had the same problem.. I changed his background to none and the problem was resolved. It is worth a shot.

Thanks for your response, but it didn't work. Besides, I have had this error right after installation of Win 2000. Even with most of the software not installed. And it happend everytime I installed Win 2000. But I did always have Win 2000 as a secondary OS. Can that be the cause?

Essi, I feel your pain as I was in the same boat for quite some time, and this was really annoying behaviour. I have an ASUS A7M266 and found the hang during restart was due to my video card (ATI All in wonder Radeon) I tried anyting I could think of but one thing seemed to eradicate the problem. I physically removed the video card from its AGP slot and powered up the computer, you should hear that high pitch beeping for the missing video card. Shut it down, put back the video card and never had this problem again. It never hurts to try. I don't know why but somehow it worked for me, so give it a try...

I have a new ASUS A7V266-E running an ATHLON 1.2, 256mb DDR, and the ASUS v7100 Pro 400MX GF2 card. I dual-boot my machine between Win2K SP2 and RedHat 7.2. I ended up using the nVIDIA Detonator drivers instead of the ASUS...I regained control over my monitor settings.

My system hangs at the POST when I perform and warm start/restart from Win2K. This sympton existed for both ASUS and nVIDIA drivers. I don't have this reboot problem from Red Hat.

Can anyone give corrective advice on this?

I have an Asus A7V266-E with an Athlon XP 1800+, (2) 512mb sticks of pc2100 ddr, matrox g450 dual head, audigy mp3, western digital 20gb (for OS), (2) wd 80gb 7200rpm striped (for storage). My system hangs on restart with all the memory installed, if i use just one stick of memory, it will reboot fine. Sometimes I get the acpi error when booting. Any Ideas???? i've tried new mb, processor, memory, and running system bareboned.
