I'm having a problem sharing between a computer with Win 2000 Pro and a computer with Win 98. The situation is, I have a home network set up, I had a laptop with Win 98 on it, and another desktop, also with Win 98, file sharing was not a problem, the computers could see each other and access each other just fine. Now here is the wrench thrown into the mix, I recently built a new PC, loaded Win 2000 Pro on it. NOW we have a file sharing issue. I am needing to access the laptop and the other desktop which are running Win 98 FROM the PC with Win 2000 Pro on it. I am able to access the computer with Win 2000 Pro FROM the laptop just fine, I got that part worked out. The problem is, when I try and access the 98 computers from Network Places in 2000, it sees the "HOME" workgroup, which the 2000 pc is a part of, but when I try and double-click on the "HOME" Workgroup, it says "Home is not accessible, the account is not authorized to log in from this station". I'm sure I have to set up something on the laptop and the other desktop for my 2000 pc to access them, but I'm not sure what. I don't want to have to log in with a user name and password from any of the computers. If anyone has any answers, please help!!! Thanks so much!

Hi Cynthia

Do all the computers have 'Client for Microsoft Networks' & 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' installed?
Do you have any drives mapped? (this seems to clear up a lot of connectivity problems)
Silly questions, but it was not mentioned...

Hello!
By default the user guest is disabled in W2000, so if you want to access to any shared resource on it you have two ways:
1.- the best one: Go to Control panel, administrative tools, administrative equipments, users, click with the right button on user GUEST, properties and enable it.

2.- The other way is create the users of the laptops in w2000 with the same name and password that they have in their own pcs.

bye!

I am sorry i forgot something....

You must have the same protocol in all the pcs....IP or netbeui or both. If you have ip then you have to assign directions to the pcs (ask me again if you don´t know how to do it). If you have netbeui there is no trouble (By default netbeui is not included in w2000 installation) you have to install it. Go to the w2000 help and ask for netbeui, follow the instructions for install it.

Bye, again

Hi Cynthia:

I will assume you are attempting to access a shared Folder on the 2000 machine from a Win98 machine. If this is the case, the fix is simple.

1. Right click on My Computer and select
Manage. This will open your Computer
Management Window.
2. Expand Local Users & Groups.
3. Select the Users folder and double click
on Guest.
4. In the Guest Properties dialog box
remove the check mark from the 'Account
Is Disabled' option. Click Apply.
5. Close the Computer Management window and
return to your desktop.
6. Right click on My Computer and select
Explore.
7. Expand the C Drive.
8. Right Click on the folder you wish to
share and select Sharing.
9. Make sure the Share This Folder option
is selected. Next, click on the
Permissions button. This will bring up
the permissions dialog box for the
shared folder.
10. Click on the Add Button. This will
bring up the Select Users or Groups
window.
11. Scroll down to Guests, doublick click to
select and click on OK. This function
allows you to authorize Guests access to
the Shared folder.
12. Select the Guests Name (Highlight) in
the Permissions dialog box. Now be sure
there is a check mark in each of the
Allow option boxes. Afterward, click
Apply, close all the way out.
You should be good to go. Please let me know if this works for you.
