I’ve just installed Windows 2000 and now my PC hangs at boot up where the monitor shows a blue background, with a small window in the centre, which also has blue contents. The PC will only boot in safe mode.

It looks like a problem with the Display Adapter, but I’m using the driver from the Win 2000 CD. (I tried installing a different one, W2KV250, but Windows didn’t like that) The currently installed adapter and driver are;

Display Adapter : Chips & Technologies 65548 PCI
Display Driver : chipsd5.dll, chipsm5.sys

I’d be very grateful if you could help me out.

Hi Dave.
It sounds like just a glich in the instalation of Win 2000 Pro. I would suggest that you install it again over itself to fix any corupt files. Have a nice day Dave.

Right click My Computer, click Manage, Device Manager, click on the + sign to expand and show the monitor you are using, double click the monitor, click Diver tab, click Update Driver, Next, select 'Search for a suitable driver'. Point it to your driver on the CD provided with the Adapter and install it. If that driver does not help, then download the latest driver from http://list.driverguide.com/list/company211/
Hope this helps.

What is the bugcheck code at your blue screen. Bugcheck code and its 4 parameter list are the most information to diagnostic your problem. If you get bugcheck code 50, it is caused by faulty ram

Hope it can help you
Albert
