I've formatted my hd on win 98 several times. I want to upgrade my present win 200 pro to xp - I goto dos and type format c: and I get the following error. Can someone help. Thanks.. Dave
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y
Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use.

just do a clean install from the xp cd. It will do all that for you.
