Comment:
hi,
I know that ICS will not work with DHCP server on Win2000 Pro. so I taken it probably won't work with win2k server either. How will I get all of my home networked computers to hit the internet through a cable modem? my win2k server is connected with the cable modem, and the rest of the PCs are win98. I have DHCP server running..should I just turn off dhcp and have the client obtain the ip automatically from the server via ICS?
You could do it that way if you wish. You can also configure NAT using Routing and Remote Access on your server. Also, there are other conditions that might prevent you from using ICS in addition to DHCP...the following is from W2K Help: "You should not use this feature in an existing network with other Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses. If you are running Windows 2000 Server, and one or more of these components exist, you must use network address translation to achieve the same result."
Also using W2K help (searching either "Internet Connection Sharing" or "NAT") you should find the configuration info you need. If not, there are links posted on this forum to some helpful sites. If you run into proplems please repost or e-mail them my way.
Also, one other (and I would say the all around best solution if you can spare the dollars) method is to get a router that provides NAT...bot Linksys and D-Link provide relatively inexpensive models that do an excellent job of sharing a cable modem and/or DSL connection.
