Why won't Win2K fill up my entire s

I just recently installed Windows 2000 on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 385XD). However, when I start it up now, the screen that comes up doesn't use the whole entire computer screen. Instead, it comes out much smaller, leaving a large black border. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know why my desktop screen won't expand to fill up all of my screen? This never happened to me while using Win98. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The other aspect is video settings. It is quite common to choose a higher res and get the desktop you describe. You then resize your screen using the screen controls. Similar to what you do with a regular monitor and using the menu. Read your manual for the keys on your laptop that will resize your screen.
Or choose a lower resolution like 640x480

If I'm not mistaken you need to set the resolution in Display properties to be the same resolution as the advertised of the notebook. If the notebook's display is 1024x768 and you put a O/S display of 800x600 it will either be poor video display or not fill the entire screen. Also definitely have the latest drivers like Rob stated. I'm going for older notebook knowledge not some of the latest technology.
