With some programs, notably games (including Need For Speed High Stakes), running the executable under Win2k gives me an error of " is not a valid Win32 application", and the program doesnt run. ALL the programs I am trying worked and still work fine when I boot Win98, so what on earth is going on??

Because 2000 is NT based, so it does not necesarily run games well or at all. Try downloading the Critical Update from Micrsoft regarding software. Most of the fixes in the update are for games.
