Subject: Where's my HDD space going?
Comment:

I have a P4 with a 40GB hard drive running Windows 2000 and connected to internet through Cox Cable. Computer is fairly new, 2 months old, and I have loaded about 10 GB worth of software. I also have about 4 GB of audio and video files that were downloaded from Kazaa. Based on this info, I should have about 25 GB of space on my hard drive, which I did for a while. However, over the past month or so it has slowly been disappearing, I am down to 1 MB now (that's right MB, not GB). I have emptied all of the temp file and cookies, and I have looked at every folder that I can find through Windows Explorer and do not see any unusual amounts of disk space being used by any of them. Two days ago I cleaned off 750 MB of audio files, and downloaded nothing new, yet today the HDD is back to 1 MB of free space. Does anyone have any idea where I can find this 25 GB of HDD space? I does seem to disappear when I am on the internet, so I wonder if it may be related to Kazaa? If anyone knows of software that could track what is taking up this space, I would buy it!

Thanks in advance for any help.

There are several viruses that will make your unit do this.

If it was my unit I would do a deep virus check and then defrag the unit.

One more thing, are you positive Win2K is seeing the entire 40-gigs?

1) are you running any ftp server software?

2) do a file search for *.* on files created in the past week. sort by date. see if there are any excessively large or unusual/unexpected files that could account for the drive space usage.

3) to answer your last question, there is a program called filemon that monitors and logs all access to your computer's file system. If there's something unusual going on that's causing the drive to be filled, filemon could reveal what it is. and, it's free.
