Sometimes when i start up my computer, I go to task manager and found out there's this MStask.exe using up 99% of my CPU power, if i start some other programs, they may only be allocated 1 or 2 % of the CPU power. It is not in my start-up program list. It is not under the Applications tab, only in processes tab. And I cant end it, it will say access denied. Anyone knows whats going on PLEASE HELP!!!!!
THANKS!!!!!

This is a bug i think it happens now and then on various tasks. I cant remeber what is does look it up on the web for more info but it definately a microsoft one, probably the task manager. Here is the fix I found go to http://www.iarsn.com/ where you will find a brilliant little app called taskinfo2001 this app can shut down any processes so be careful its really handy for debugging scripts ect.
Good Luck Have fun

i am having the exact same problem, mstask and sometimes wscript.exe, just go nuts and chew up all of the cpu time. I think it has something to do with IIS and/or PWS. I started having this problem as soon as I installed the internet information services component of windows 2000 professional. Other then being able to kill the process with what is recommended, which is great, why does this happen? Does anyone know?

Got a fix for it... As it turns out, in the Services panel, there is a service called Task Scheduler. This service is used to run programs at a specified time. From what I gather, it is NOT required, but more of a convenience if you want programs, like a disk optimizer or something, to run at a specific time. I am not 100% for sure that it is or is not required, but I went into the Services panel (Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services ) and set the startup type to Manual. When rebooting, it doesn't run mstask any more, and everything seems fine. Don't take my word on this, I am not for sure that the OS does not use this for its own purposes, but I would imagine if you stopped it and the OS required it, it would not let you stop it. In my case, it did not say anything and I am running fine without it.
Hope that helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I just changed it. Gonna reboot my computer. Hopefully fixed the problem.
Was making my dual PIII 933 w/ 384 MB RAM all SCSI 160 run like a 133 Pentium, lol.
