Hi,

My pagefile.sys has reached to 1.9 GB and its too big as I did not set the size during installation. Now my C drive has only 600 MB which is insufficient.

My questions is, if I set the pagefile size now, does it effect the OS after reboot? Now the C drive size is coming to full...so may be this are from the accumulation of pagefile. I'm worried, if the size reduced, it cause the OS to crash or something else comes up as this is a very critical server.

Home someone can help me!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Ramesh

Ramesh you don't need a pagefile that large. Depending on what you are doing you most likely are not using more then 32 meg of this pagefile.

I could go into a long explaination but set it to 1gig for both min and max. Reboot.

You will be fine. What you will want to do is use performance monitor [computer management] and monitor the pagefile after a month of usage [no reboot].

I believe you will find with that much ram you can safely reduce your pagefile to 500meg or what you find is the max used.

I am writing from a XP pro station with 1/2 gig of ram and NO PAGE FILE. I play games, cruise the internet, etc and no problems no worries.

Well, I would disagree. You can certainly set the page file to whatever you want but I'm pretty sure the engineers at Microsoft did a litte research on this before they came up with the recommendation of the pagefile being 1.5 times RAM. Setting the pagefile to 0 has no positive effect other than freeing up some drive space.

Remesh, how much RAM do you have in this server. The pagefile should be set to 1.5 times the amount of RAM. If this means you don't have enough drive space, then fix that problem by adding more drives or a bigger drive, or moving the pagefile to another location. You can set the pagefile smaller for a temporary fix but I wouldn't set it to 0 on a critical server. We aren't talking about playing games here. Have you ever seen a server crash with the 'your pagefile is too small or missing' error? I have, and it's no fun.

Let Windows control the pagefile size and give it enough space to work.

Good luck.

Glen is right on certain points, but I don't think there is any harm to manually setting the pagefile size, as long as Glen mentioned, it is set to close to the norm of 1.5 times the amount of physically memory. In this case, letting Windows manage the pagile size isn't working for Ramesh because it is making it so huge.

But is the large pagefile the symptom of another problem? Ramesh may have a program with a memory leak that is not properly releasing memory and keeps filling it up. I'd monitor task manager to maybe see what processes are using the most memory after long periods of time.
