I'm curious as to what smss.exe (Session Manager Subsystem) does. It's always running in the background so if any of you can tell me what function it performs, I'd be much obliged.

It handles the kernal end of the current session. It restarts each time a system is booted. and remains until it is shutdown. This is referred to as a session.
If you want to find out how it works, I'd suggest getting some good books on the internals of Win2k.
