Subject: what causes memory dump?OS: windows 2000 proCPU/Ram: pentium III/500+ |
Comment: I have a two slot pcmcia card device. One card will come up in my explorer. When I insert the second card(either slot);my screen goes dark and I immediately get a memory dump. Itcliks off ntil it reaches about 75 and then the computer closes down and restarts. What is this? Is it connected to my second card not showing up in my explorer? Can I correct it? Thanks, Ron

Reply: (edit)Usually memory dumps are associated with faulty memory. It could be that you do not have enough memory to cater for the second card. (You have not indicated how much memory your computer has). Or, it could be that your computer memory is experiencing problems. There are programs that you can download to test the memory. One of them is at http://www.freshdevices.com/memory.html Hope this helps.

Reply: (edit)When a memory dump is written, a system event log 1001 is also written as well. Check system event log and look for record 1001 (ie sysdump record). Find out the bugcheck code and go to goggle to search the solution.

Reply: (edit)Dumps have one thing in common, whether the source is hardwae or software, and that is an instruction set that was being worked on lead to a place the system couldn't get back from. It isn't that memory is bad but what the system was executing was bad. This is where the bug codes really help. But in your case of the pcmcia cards the source is clear. its the pcmcia card. Are you using the hardware manager to stop and start the card service? What does the cards web site have to say on the subject? Correct driver for the card installed? What kind of card is it? You say see in explorer so is this a drive or what?
