weird registry/dll problem

Many graphics packages I use write their result as an .AVI file but with some of them I get this strange error (during file write): "Media Player: Unknown Problem while loading the specified device driver." although I'm not trying to playback the file. On a website I found this problem is related to a 'Mediamatics Active Movie Filter': upon installation, changes are made to the MCI extension settings in the registry, which point to a non-existent DLL file. I did a regsitry seach for 'Mediamatics' but nope.
My question: how can i find registry settings that point to a DLL not avail on my hd. Is there a registry tool (under w2k) that can help me find the error?
Did this problem just start happening? Have you installed anything new, upgraded anything, installed any new plugins?
It could possibly be one of your graphics packages as well. I'd check their websites and see if they have anything on this issue.
I would check on codecs because it sounds like a codec issue too. What compressor are you using to create these avi files?

I have this prob already for a long time; it's probably caused by removing those "no longer needed ddl" during an uninstall of an app (long ago). So, it's not related to recent changes; in this case it would be easy to go back. I checked web sites for updates, faq's, ... I have this prob with all registered codecs.
