I keep getting the error "The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was unable to load the file C:\WINDOWS\UpgDlls\w95upg.dll\\WIN9XUPG\W95UPD.DLL"

The PC is a Compaq Presario running Compaq's version of Windows ME. I have checked the c:\Windows\UpgDlls\w95upg.dll and it is there, and looks fine. I don't unerstand why Win2k is adding the \\WIN9XUPG\W95UPD.DLL bit to the end of the path.

I know a clean install is the redommended option, but I have reasons why I need to go down the upgrade route.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

WinME is not upgradeable to Win2000. You
will have to do a clean install or duel boot.

I know WindowsME was never the best or most stable OS, but I have already succcessfully upgraded one PC from WindowsME to Win2000, admittedly not a Compaq Presario. I even have Adaptec Easy CD working on the upgraded PC.

Any ideas or workarounds would be grealty appreciated.

i answered your original posting of this subject and gave the same opinion as john.
you don't sound as though you want to take peoples advice. it's kind of rude that you just posted the question again as when people answer questions they like to follow the flow of feedback. most people are just going to tell you the same.
can you specify exactly what is so important that you can't do a clean install or dual boot with w2k.
yes you can some times get away with an upgrade but you have a cleaner / leaner /faster OS if you do a clean install and then follow a few procedures to speed it up even more.
if it's that important for you to keep files then keep ME, otherwise take johns advice and dual boot, then you can safely test w2k for conflicts while having a working os to seek advice from.

To whom this may concern,
My computer is a Pc Direct computer which is designed for Windows95 and I recently installed Windows98SE. Now I want to install Windows2000 but I am not able to,

this is what it says when I tried to install it :

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
( It pops up two times)

The option to upgrade will not be availiable at this time because setup was unable to load the file D:\1386\WIN9XUPG\W95UPG.DLL

A dynamic link library (DLL) intialization routine failed.

D: is my cdrom drive since I was installing it from the Windows2000 cd.

Any replies on this would be greatly appreciated

Yours Sincerely

Paul
