Was ubable to properly reinstall graphics software ,then Adobe reader. In trying to repair I redownloaded Win2000 from original disk . After bringing o/s up to date with Win upgrades am now trying to regenerate my old programmes. Find that they always have a warning (different reasons) and will not install. sometimes error 1607. Any recommendations?

What do you mean by "regenerate?" Run? Install? Did you Repair the Windows 2K install, or did you format and reinstall?

Did you reinstall the Motherboard chipset drivers? What size is your harddrive?
What service pack is integrated into your Win2000CD?

Thank you both for your replies,
#1 By regenerate I mean reactivate. The programme files are all in place in their files but obviously the registry has been wiped. I thought I was formating and reinstalling Windows. Admittedly I was in a state of panic.
#2 No I never thought of reinstalling motherboard drivers
Windows is 2000 5.00 2195 and I never saw any mention of service pack . I have now upgraded to service pack 4 C: drive is 74.5 G of which 43.1% is used

"Obviously the registry has been wiped." Not necessarily.

What exactly did you do? A Repair? A Reinstall? A reinstall to another partition?

Thanks for your reply. I must have repaired it as all the application files are intact on C:. I did it to the same partition. Previously my graphics card would'nt reinstall but after my work it did nicely. However my Virus checker gives the message "The programme was not able to load SLID_DOMdocument40 correctly" in a box headed XML helper Init.Other notices typicaly are "exception exceptionin module is-pk9me.tmp at 00053255 coinitialize failed " and often error 1709. Do these mean anything to you?

OK then. You may just need to reinstall the program that are not functioning properly. Be sure to remove them using add/remove programs or it there is an uninstaller .exe in the program folder use that. Reboot before reinstalling. The antivirus may require an uninstaller from the AVirus website.

I have just discovered that there is a new file on C: called $WIN-NTS.BT. It does not seem to be a complete program but has System 32 and 149 files. The system 32 folder has only two files ntdll.dll and smss(aplication)

I reread the drive size answer and feel you may have a drive larger than 127GB. Win2000 must have at least SP3 to use a large harddrive. The simple solution for you is this. Reboot and watch the startup screens. All drives should be properly identified by model. The model number always incorporates the drive size as part of the number. If larger than 127GB then you can partition it and install to a partition smaller than 127GB.

Do you have a floppy drive and a Win98/ME setup floppy with fdisk64 on it?

OK I think I finally get it. You still have Win2000 running but you can't reinstall programs, correct? Download a program called CCleaner. It can remove most of the junk on your HDrive and also has a registry cleaner.

I have done that (surprise that it installed) and it took out 344 Mb of junk (I hope). Computer seems to be faster off the mark but still cannot open any of my old files or install anything downloaded. Keep getting messages installe failed at exception etc .I see a lot of flashes of I think windows is installing but they are too fast to get any identification. A lot of install attempts cite is-***.tmp files. CCleaner didnt seem to look at any files other than the paltry number that I have managed to get working. The large number of applications in my Program files were not mentioned.
Is there any merit in clearing my "E" partition and installing a fresh version of Windows 2000 on it

Have you gone to Windows update and installed all updates. Sounds like you need to get Installer 3.1. The version on Win2000 is obsolete.

Right click on the My Computer icon. Choose properties and under the general tab what does it say about your Windows version?

If you don't have at least SP4 installed I recommend you install it and the post SP4 rollups. Below are links for accessing the downloads and to explain about using large drives with Win2000. Check that out.

I have upgraded my system to SP4 and am not sure how the other large drive partitioned into 3 smaller partions could be affecting my problem as the system was working satisfactorily for over a year in its present configuration before my unfortunate "Fix"

If you read the link it states that even after applying SP4 you may still need to edit the registry to add the entry presented in the article. That may or may not be necessary. You do need the newer version of windows installer though. Many installations will fail without it. The reason some work is because the program was designed to use the older installer.

Did you get the newer version of installer?
Get it at the link below.

Yes I have checked that the upgrades are active and have sp4 rollup as the most recent . Checking Windows Installer sheet it speaks of MSI.dll version 3.1.4000.1823 or 2435. I actually have MSI version 3.1.4000.4033 installed . Also have MSI.EXEC version 3.01 .4000.1823. Could they be interfering with one another?

I don't think so but it makes you wonder why there are so many versions. From what I read today the old version can be removed.

Thanks for getting back to us with a progress report. A little tip for you. Usually better to use safe mode when dealing with nasties, in case you didin't know that.

I think the viruses were Red herrings. I have scanned ad nauseum using 3 to 4 different programs(under safe mode) and deleted a little. Nothing has changed. If I could break through the glass floor into my old programmes i could maybe do something. if Control Panel Add/Remove could see them as Windows Explores can I could delete them and then, maybe, reinstall.
