Ok, I know the answer is on this site somewhere but I can't find it. There is somw very valuable advice on this forum. (Thank the heavens). I took a 5 Gig HD fdisked it, partitioned and formatted it. Set BIOS to boot to CDRom first, and it said ATAPI:CDROM invalid system disk. Tried it several times. Tried a Win98 startup disk and had it load CDROM drivers so I could get to the E: drive and type Setup. It says SETUP won't run in DOS. Went to the i386 dir and typed winnt and it started running..YAY.. but was taking forever and dropping files, saying can't copy blah.rmi etc. Haven't done the 4 bootdisk thing, but there's got to be an easier way to do this, my gosh. I can uninstall reinstall upgrade any Win9x with my brain tied behind my back so asking for advice on this is real painful when people pay me good money to fix their PC's damaged OS, etc. Thanks in Advance for the advice.

There is NO DOS in W2K NT4 XP, you need either the bootable CD or make the installation disks from the CD and put first floppy in and boot from that it will load all neccessary drivers and inquire about partitions fat32 ntfs etcetcetcetcetc.

W9x/ME is a GUI on top of DOS, the NT family was based on IBM OS/2.

btw if you have win9x/ME installed you can install from there with the CD.

To begin a 2000 install from a DOS bootdisk one changes to the \i386 folder on the 2000 CD and types: winnt - not setup.

Copy the i386 folder to a temporary directory on your hard drive. Run winnt from there.

OK, I just need to fill in the blanks. Step by step with a clean new HD..
How do I boot up? How do I copy the i386 folder onto the HD since it isn't formatted?

Once the i386 folder contents are on the HD, it should be fairly easy, but before that...??
Thanks
