I am having two problems with my laptop Twinhead A5000 / 128 RAM / 10 Gb HD / 700 MHz.
1 - the W2K OS is slow to load 2 - the "Standby" feature locks up my system!

If your Win2000 uses a router or similar to access the internet, then it has to load a local IP using DHCP. For example, if the router is 192.168.0.1, your Win2000 computer would ask it for a local IP address using DHCP and the router would assign it something like 192.168.0.2
Your Win2000 computer has to have the "gateway" set in the TCP/IP settings in your network control panel. The Gateway would be the local IP address for your router (192.168.0.1). Having the gateway set correctly, then your Win2000 computer can quickly get it's local IP from the router and finish booting. Without the gateway properly set, bootup is slow.

Thanks for the information Preston.
My problem resides if I am on the net or not. My TCP/IP settings are set to detect the IP and DNS automaticaly, when connected to the net.

Slowbooting with Win2k can come about from a mass of different reasons. Check your system/Application event logs. This will give you a greater clue as to whats causing the delay on boot (Administrative tools in ctrl panel - Event Viewer)
Disable the Power Standby features in the bios. Seen issues with Power management on Dell kit having a falling out with Win2k powersaving features and hanging badly. Disable one or the other to avoid this issue.

how slow is slow?, mine takes about 2 minutes from switch on to ready to use
Mine takes 20 minutes - I know it's a problem with the RPC service starting but I don't know what to do about it! I have checked and there are no routers set up on the server which could be delaying it. -Kim
