Machine:
Dell Inspiron 7000 P2-400(loaded)Problem:
Gray Screen of Death after a fresh W2k Install.Up'd it from 98SE to W2Kpro and it took forever on the install when it came time to detect the monitor etc within the install prog. I ended up having to finish the install via 'Safe Mode'(it kept locking the monitor in the same spot every time) as there were no probs in that mode, and the rest of the install went fine.(luckily windows plops enough of the install down onto the hard drive b4 the monitor detection problem, or else it would have been a much different story here)
When I went to boot the machine as 'normal' after the install finished, I kept getting the 'grey screen of death' so... one more boot into 'Safe' just to make sure and all was fine in there and it was, all the hardware detected properly. Next...
Solution:
I disabled the 'auto feature' in the Dell Bios for the Monitor Mode. I selected the 'LCD ONLY' mode, reboot, and voila, we now have no probs getting into W2k...THEN went to the Dell Site to upgrade drivers for the entire system.
She runs like a charm now.
