Peter,

What you want to do can be accomplished but how it is accomplished depends on a few things. The issue that you have to contend with is that if you have one DHCP server, the client on the subnet will not be able to contact it directly since the DHCP request is a broadcast which may be blocked by some routers. If your routers support RFC 1542 which is the standard for forwarding DHCP / BOOTP broadcasts, it should work. In other words, some routers will understand that specific type of broadcast and allow those broadcast to pass though. Check with your router vendor for that.

If your router does not support that, then you will need to configure a DHCP relay agent. The agent will hear the requests and pass then through to the DHCP server. This is a service that runs on Windows 2000 or NT server.

You just need to configure two DHCP scopes, one for each subnet. When a request comes into the DHCP server, it will recognize which subnet the request came from and hand out a corresponding address.

Do a search on the net or Microsoft's site for DHCP relay agent and I think you'll find all the info you need. It is not difficult to set up.

Good luck.
